BREATHE Laboratory

UCR SOM Research Building

The BREATHE Laboratory is a lab space dedicated to studies on air quality, health effects, and pulmonary physiology providing support for biomedical sciences students and clinical sciences faculty.

It is adjacent to the SOM Research Instrumentation Core, which includes a suite of gene expression profiling instruments from Nanostring and 10x Genomics, as well as advanced confocal microscopy and metabolic assay instruments, so studies can take advantage of all the related instruments.

Equipment

The BREATHE Laboratory incorporates specialized facilities including:

  • A variety of environmental exposure chambers enabling chronic continuous exposures to suspensions of various aerosolized particulate matter (PM), with SMPS continuous monitoring of the exposure conditions
  • A Flexivent pulmonary spirometry system to study lung dynamics, airway resistance, and related parameters
  • A Buxco Whole Body Plethysmography system for students on respiratory regulation under different gas mixture conditions
  • A Beckman Coulter LS13320 Particulate Size Analyzer for fine optical analysis of a variety of particle mixtures
